Call to Submit Photo / Resume for NYC Appointments

As Wide As I Can See
Writer: Mark Snyder
Director: Dan Horrigan
Casting: Judy Bowman Casting
1st rehearsal: 1/30/12
Runs: 2/23-3/10/12
NYC Equity Showcase, approval pending; $500 stipend

Best friends Dean and Tyler find themselves still tied to their wilting Ohio hometown. When a girl from their past appears offering a chance of escape, they are forced to confront the lost promises they made to themselves and each other. A new play about settling scores, realizing love, and perfecting a great burger marinade in the dying days of summer.

SEEKING:

Jessica: Caucasian Female, mid 40s. Waitress, attractive, and serious. Opinionated, highly-organized. Acts mature and self-sufficient, but wants a commitment from her boyfriend Dean and secretly longs for the acceptance of his friends. Gets caught playing the “parent” role too much. The worst anyone could say about her is that she’s practical. Loves Dean and doesn’t want to lose him, but knows she will survive either way.

Dean: Caucasian Male. Just turned 30, but is unemployed. Began a promising journalism career, but finds himself back in Ohio and out of work, after some time away. Good-looking, athletic, with a natural smile. He wants to believe he’s better than he really is, and is terribly conflicted about the direction his life is going and his lack of participation in it. Lives with Jess, and things are going well until Charlotte comes back into his life. A bit of a ‘regular guy’ who is smart and charming.

Charlotte Finn: Caucasian Female. Late 20s- early 30s. Hers was a notorious name in high school, but mostly because she was smart and ambitious, and was clearly going to get out of the Midwest. Charismatic, but can be quirky and dark, with damage underneath. She’s a fast thinker, usually three steps ahead in a conversation, and is capable of grandeur. She never realized her dreams and goals, and comes back to town and shakes up the lives of Dean, Jess, Nan, and Tyler.

Walt: Caucasian Male. 40s. Grizzled, but whittled down and softened by Portland. Kind and jocular in his mannerisms yet he is very intimidating and confrontational. Off putting, Out of place. Has experienced the world. Seems innocuous, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. Married to Charlotte: it’s a completely odd match. Lives in Portland with her, and accepts her for all her flaws, even if she seems to be leaving him. He knows she can’t live without him, and will win in the end. He is truly in love with her.

NYC auditions will be held on 1/13 and 1/17/12 by appointment only. No need to re-submit if you have already submitted by e-mail. For consideration, mail picture and resume to:

As you are reading this, something very cool is happening. To commemorate World AIDS Day today, I have traveled from New York to California to perform The Big “A” at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. As many of you know, The Big “A” is my solo piece chronicling my own experience of living with HIV. On a selfish level, creating and performing this piece has been a totally cathartic and healing experience. However, in a larger sense, it is so much more than that. The Big “A” is a story that not only perpetuates an urgent dialogue about HIV but also addresses issues of depression, stigma and, most importantly, hope. Thanks to this past summer’s FringeNYC production and opportunities like my performance tonight at Cal Poly, The Big “A” is beginning to reach more communities and have a greater impact. This is a pretty momentous occasion for me and for At Hand. With your support both emotional and financial, you have all been a part of this incredible journey.

At Hand Theatre was able to make all of this possible because of our commitment to telling new, provocative, engaging, and wholly theatrical stories, and continued support from you. We are gearing up for another exciting season of new work and hope you’ll consider donating to us. Our first production of the 2012 season will be As Wide As I Can See by our fantastic playwright and collaborator Mark Snyder (Lila Cante, 2009). We are confident that this rich and human drama about the current struggles of small town USA will spark another theatrical conversation that is relevant and exciting.

Please consider donating to At Hand this holiday season. Help us continue to create exceptional theatre and stimulate meaningful dialogues. It is through these dialogues that we can begin to create great change.

Thank you for your generous support! See you at the theatre in 2012!

Dan Horrigan
Artistic Director, At Hand Theatre Company

Every donor to At Hand receives recognition on our website, and no amount of generosity is too small. (No amount is too big either!) Your gift could help us sponsor one of our invaluable developmental readings, where we foster and develop the work of phenomenal emerging playwrights like Mark. You could even get free tickets to one of our productions or our annual benefit concert at Joe’s Pub, Broadway Recycled. Every donation is tax-deductible and received with our deepest gratitude. Click here to find out more about the benefits of giving.

To donate, please send a check to At Hand Theatre Company, 47-11 47th Street #2R, Woodside, NY, 10471, or simply visit our website to give online: http://athandtheatre.com/donate/

THE BIG “A”, written and performed by At Hand Artistic Director Dan Horrigan, was produced this past summer at the New York International Fringe Festival. Dan’s all-at-once touching, thoughtful, and comedic story of living with HIV was a hit at the festival and, by popular demand, was revived for one special performance at the Laurie Beechman! Now THE BIG “A” will be moving beyond NYC!

THE BIG “A” will be presented to commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1, 2011 at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Proceeds from this performance will benefit ASN, the AIDS Support Network of San Luis Obispo.

This will be the first of many road gigs for Dan and the piece. At Hand is proud to have played a pivotal role in the success of this piece and we look forward to its incredible life beyond the Fringe!

At Hand is proud to make its FringeNYC debut with Dan Horrigan’s standup / confessional mash mash up, The Big “A”. The ever-hysterical (and always adorable) Dan Horrigan tells tales about living with HIV in his solo show, The Big “A”.

Sound familiar? The Big “A” is both a revamp and a follow up to Horrigan’s previous solo piece, MY AiDS, produced by At Hand in 2010.

In his ever-evolving narrative of living with HIV, monologist Dan Horrigan tells tales of sparring off with a sassy nurse, vanquishing a giant hairy nipple, and living with HIV. With humor and candor, Dan Horrigan shares his contemporary experience and irreverent outlook on being HIV-positive. The production is being directed by Matthew DiCarlo at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre for the 15th Annual New York International Fringe Festival.

For those who attended MY AiDS, The Big “A” will prove to be a delightful return to Horrigan’s verbal wit and emotional honesty with more than a few new, hysterical, and touching tales. For newbies, Dan Horrigan sheds a very human and often laugh-out-loud light on living with HIV, grappling with growing up, and self acceptance.

This very personal and very intimate production of The Big “A” will be presented at the Off-Broadway landmark Cherry Lane Theatre at 38 Commerce Street in the Studio Theatre. The Big “A” performs August 13 at 9:15PM, August 18 at 10:15PM, August 21 at 8:30PM, August 25 at 5:00PM, August 27 at 7:00PM and August 28 at noon. Written by exceptional new playwright Mfoniso Udofia and directed by our own artistic director Daniel Horrigan, this play follows American-born Adiagha as she struggles to honor her Nigerian family and its deeply steeped traditions, while fighting to come into her own voice and individuality. Alongside a compelling story, The Grove combines traditional Nigerian song, spoken word poetry, and strong vocal rhythms to make a truly unique and exciting piece of theatre.

Over the 4-day rehearsal period, the cast delved deeply into both the dialect and cultural norms of Nigeria, particularly focusing on the hierarchy and expectations within the family and how these traditions translate for a first/second-generation family in present-day America. The Grove was presented on Monday evening, April 11th at Shetler Studios and featured the acting talents of Maechi Aharanwa (Adiagha), Dawn-Elin Fraser (Abasiama), Axel Avin, Jr. (Disciple), Scout Durwood (Kimberley), Nikiya Mathis (Toyoima), Juwan Stone (Ekong), Stephen Grove Malloy (Cosmos), Jamil A.C. Mangan (Udom), and Sarita Louise Moore (Stage Directions). The reading was co-produced by Erin Washington and Axel Avin, Jr., and stage managed by Angela F. Kiessel.
